Mike & Kimberly Teel in their motorhome.
On Monday, public radio’s Marketplace aired a very poignant and revealing segment about a working-class Las Vegas couple whose suburban home went into foreclosure. If you’ve ever been tempted to jokingly think of someone as “trailer trash,” you’ve got to read or listen to this story.
We all know that there are real people behind the stereotypes and labels that we have in our minds, but I still need to remind myself of that fact from time to time.
Poor family. That must hurt.
I’m the only person in my immediate family who’s never lived in a trailer, so I know from “trailer trash”! 🙂 People live in them for all kinds of reasons. And a lot of them are good people.
This is precisely why the race issue should be resolved.
There are people behind the stereotypes and usually the generalizations painted that are hurtful and unfair.
I actually had a conversation today that touched this precisely with a friend who vehemently opposes to the trailer trash.
Perhaps today in that conversation did she “get” how this relates to racial reconciliation.
Thanks Ed.
ok – bad english and multi-tasking….
“to the term trailer trash”
At any rate – once again you rock Ed
Gina, I share your experience. Everyone else in my immediate family lived in a trailer and I have several friends who come form the same scenario.
I think we often use “trailer trash” as a subtle method to make ourselves feel better.
When we use those “trailer trash” it has a huge effect on those living in trailers and trailer parks. It is essentially cutting the legs out form under children looking to succeed. They are told either directly or indirectly that they won’t be able to make it because of where they are from and who their parents are.
We must watch our words, because they are powerful.
Sounds like these two had enough money to buy a nice motorhome. Seems like they made VERY bad choices and lived way outside of their means. Who in their right mind gets an adjustable rate mortgage. Sounds like they were not too smart either. I have always lived with what I could afford. NO fancy motorhomes, boats, etc….They lost their home due to poor money management.
