ChristianityToday.com has posted a solid, if brief, interview with Barack Obama. The Democratic presidential candidate talks about his personal faith, his views about abortion, President Bush’s Faith-Based Initiative, and rumors that he’s a Muslim.
I spoke at Hollywood Presbyterian Church over the weekend for its annual Martin Luther King Jr. tribute event. It was a great time, and thanks to all of you who prayed for me.
Anyway, I was taken aback by the words of one woman who approached me after my speech. Somehow the conversation turned to politics and she told me, “I don’t have a problem with Barack Obama being an African American [I won’t even touch that part]; what troubles me is that he’s a Muslim.” I was not totally shocked by her comment, since I’ve seen that misinformation being circulated around the Internet for a while. Still, I didn’t think anybody would actually believe it—especially a West Coast Presbyterian! It was interesting to witness firsthand how that fabrication has stuck.
